Portugal Prevented from Earlier Exit in Their World Cup Campaign

Portugal nearly follows the earlier exit of Spain and England when they were trailing one goal to two until Silvestre Varela managed to equalize in the last minute of the normal time. Nani gave Portugal the early lead in the 5th minute before Jermaine Jones equalized in the 64th and Clint Dempsey brought United States ahead in 81st minute. The dramatic game was held in Manaus; the goal by Clint Dempsey looked like will bring United States through from the Group G, but Portugal kept their chance alive when Varela managed to head a goal from Christiano Ronaldo’s cross in the 90th minute.

Raul Meireles were substituted by Varela in 69th minute to bring the positive impact after his presence in the field for 20 minutes. Portugal is having the opportunity to reach the last 16 if Germany can beat United States and they win their match against Ghana with 6 goals, but their chance will vanished if United States can win or at least has a draw against Germany. Portugal’s vulnerable defense was visible when United States managed to score 2 goals with quick counter attack. Ronaldo’s minimal contribution due to his injury is definitely affecting the performance of Portugal.
